About Light Up Cuba

Our Story, Our Friends and Family's Story

Canadians with friends and family in Cuba, inspired by a solar-aid story from Pakistan, sending energy resilience to Cuban households.

As a group of Canadians with friends and family in Cuba, we were inspired by a story from Pakistan where a family was dying from the heat. Relatives in Canada sent solar panels to Pakistan to power air conditioners during the heat of the day.

The situation in Cuba is a little different. There is fairly reliably power 1-3 hours a day (an unbelievable inconvenience in North America) so the priority is to find solar and batteries that can last up to 23 hours.

With our batteries, we are adding energy resilience. By adding solar, which is available locally at reasonable price, we can provide energy independence. One 2000Wh battery for US$749 keeps the fridge cold, the lights on, charges cell phones and gives just a bit of relief from the heat with electrical powered fans.

The model, like for Pakistan, is that a relative or Cuba-friendly donor agrees to send a solar generator to Cuba. They pay for the battery and shipping. We take care of the logistics by providing a wholesale account and arranging shipping to Cuba.

Shipping takes 3-4 weeks from the time we order it.

We have been focused on the pool of money of people wanting to send batteries to reduce the suffering of their family in Cuba. This is a remittance evolution. It is more efficient than sending cash to Cuba, with huge commissions, only to purchase the absolute cheapest products that are generally available there.
